Additionally, this presentation will also include other recommendations for parents to help decrease their child’s anxiety.

Session Goals:
  • Describe how the Character Strong group counseling program works
  • Provide parents with additional information/recommendations for reducing anxiety in their child.

We often tell children to take a break to calm down. But do kids know how to do it effectively without getting even more frustrated? Instead of the usual “take a deep breath” and “count to ten,” this interactive session will introduce very specific breathing techniques that are easier to follow and remember.

Utilizing Therapeutically Applied Role Playing games in a grief setting
Adventures Through Grief is a grief-specific, Therapeutically Applied Role-Playing Game group designed to support adolescents and young adults experiencing bereavement. This group uses tabletop role-playing games (like Dungeons & Dragons) in a play-based group format to create a safe and engaging environment for participants to build community and process their experiences. Blue Ridge Hospice has seen amazing results with our own groups, and received a grant to expand the implementation of these groups to eight grief centers across the US (including training and funding for each participating site). In this session we will share an overview of what the groups have been like at BRH, the reason we chose this approach and what we have learned in training others for expansion.

Over Control vs Under Control – A Transdiagnostic Perspective LIMITED
Saturday January 25, 2025 11:30am - 12:20pm EST
This 1 hour presentation reviews the concept of over control (OC) and under controlled (UC) individuals.  It defines the differences of OC and UC and how diagnosis presents in these individuals. The presentation will review bio-temperament and how it presents in an OC vs UC individual.  After defining and reviewing the differences we will look at two specific treatment interventions that are evidenced based and the review the similarities and the differences. Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (RO DBT) are the two treatments that will be reviewed in this presentation.  It will begin with a review of DBT and the goals and objectives of the treatment followed by what RODBT is and the goals and objectives that treatment.  The presentation will provide hands on interventions that parents can use when supporting with students/children who are OC or UC.  Participants will leave the training with a better understanding for what treatment (ie: DBT or RO DBT)  to pursue when a child is over controlled versus under controlled, and a good understanding of the differences between the two behavioral therapies by reviewing case examples.

Raising an intuitive eater: What works for kids and teens?
Saturday January 25, 2025 11:30am - 12:20pm EST
We know that food does not ‘fit a box’ and, therefore, does not have to maintain the labels it too often does. Eating broccoli does not inherently make one healthy, nor does eating a cookie make one inherently unhealthy. This rigid dichotomy can fuel disordered eating and, furthermore, cause poor body image. This can be an even greater risk factor when sports and movement come into play. Building balance earlier on and allowing an open narrative with your children can help form positive and long-lasting behaviors. Therefore, educating children on the benefits of proper nutrition, building and appreciating food, and forming a relationship with food and their body can drastically improve their future selves.

The Nuts and Bolts of Executive Functioning and Behavior LIMITED
Saturday January 25, 2025 11:30am - 12:20pm EST
In a changing world with technology advancing by the minute, the way we are educating and parenting
our children is becoming more challenging. It’s becoming harder for teachers and parents to engage
students and set expectations both at home and at school. Executive functioning, while not a new
concept, is becoming more of a topic of interest as organizing, planning, time management, and
prioritizing are linked to behavior, social, and emotional skills. Students and families that have strong
executive functioning skills are more likely to handle daily responsibilities without as much worry.
Students that have a system to tackle homework, studying, and planning for the future are likely to be
more independent and resilient. Executive functioning skills are not innate, however; they must be
taught and practiced. These skills can be taught from a very young age. This presentation will provide a
brief overview of executive functioning and will include practical strategies for immediate use in both
the home and school settings for children, teens, and adults. Participants will leave the presentation
with strategies and an understanding of how these strategies can support common behavioral
challenges such as school refusal, becoming easily overwhelmed with everyday tasks, low frustration
tolerance, and low stamina for work and home tasks. Furthermore, participants will also be given access
to our Google drive of ready-made resources for immediate use.
